Top of Michigan Trails Network

If you're looking for an awesome multi-day trail adventure, travel "up north" to the top of Michigan's Lower Peninsula where you will discover a growing network of nearly 300 miles of multi-use trails. The Top of Michigan Trails Network was built on the remnants of several railways that once hauled freight to be ferried across the Straits of Mackinaw and brought travelers to some of Michigan's most popular tourist destinations. This expansive trail network rambles along scenic stretches of state forest, rolling farmland, rivers, inland lakes, and the shorelines of Lake Huron and Little Traverse Bay.

Overseeing the development and care of this trail network is the Top of Michigan Trails Council. The council has been very active, completing most of the rails-to-trails conversions over the past decade. And they continue to make great stides.

The final phase of the North Western State Trail was officially completed in 2016, including a beautiful new bridge over the Maple River south of Pellston.

The first phase of the 3.5-mile Charlevoix Lake To Lake Trail was completed in 2015, connecting Lake Charlevoix to Fisherman's Island State Park on Lake Michigan.

The first 3.2 miles of the Boyne City to Charlevoix Trail was completed this past summer. The paved trail begins in Boyne City and travels north through Young State Park to Springwater Beach Road. The trail will be built in 5 phases as easements are finalized and funding becomes available.

The first 13.5 miles of the Alpena to Hillman Trail has been funded and is now in the engineering phase. It will include pavement in the City of Alpena and crushed limestone for rest of the way. We'll keep you posted on its progress.
