As its name implies, the I-275 Metro Trail follows along this major expressway for 31.6 miles, from the intersection of 12 Mile Road and Meadowbrook Road in Novi to South Huron Road near New Boston, intersecting the Hines Park Trail, Lower Rouge River Trail and Downriver Linked Greenways Trail along the way. This paved asphalt trail offers a fun way to spend a day racing cars along the freeway. If you like riding fast, this is your trail.
The I-275 Metro Trail was originally built in 1978 as a new concept in alternative transportation, but was not maintained and fell into serious disrepair. Over the past six years, MDOT has progressively refurbished or completely rebuilt most of the original trail surfaces, bridges and amenities. The final stage of the project was completed in the summer 2015 when the section from the I-94 overpass to South Huron Road was completely rebuilt.
