Fred Meijer Kenowa Trail

The 9.8-mile Fred Meijer Kenowa Trail travels through quintessential Michigan farm country along large expanses of corn, wheat and soy bean fields and pastures with grazing livestock. This quiet pathway will keep you entertained along its route, watching farmers work their fields and witnessing the changing scenery from spring planting to fall harvest.

The Fred Meijer Kenowa Trail was strategically developed to create an important non-motorized connection between trail networks in the Grand Rapids and Holland metro areas. Spearheaded by the West Michigan Trails & Greenways Alliance, the project was especially challenging since no abandoned railways or suitable right-of-ways existed between the two urban trail systems. Working in cooperation with Zeeland and Jamestown townships and the Ottawa County Parks Commission, a route was finally engineered in 2010, weaving its way through the two townships from 76th Street near Zeeland to Kenowa Avenue on the Kent/Ottawa county border.

Completed in the spring of 2012, the trail includes a 10-foot-wide paved asphalt path along Byron Road, 5-foot shoulders along 48th Street, paved path along Riley Street, a bridge and 5-foot-wide sidewalks through downtown Jamestown and along 24th Street, and paved path and elevated boardwalks from 24th Street to Kenowa Avenue. To connect with the Grand Rapids trail network, you must ride a road route east on 68th Street, north on Ivanrest Avenue, and east on 64th Street to Kent Trails. Local officials in Kent County are currently working on possible ways to connect the two trails with a paved path in the coming years.
